i just started working on a series of friends and acquaintances.
i want to document my life as it is right now, and capture the people in it.

seems my drawings do so in a way that photographs can't.

toned paper tends to assert my subjects' personalities, makes their features more severe.
it also frees up a little time, as i'm starting with an already-shaded plain.

this is certainly not my most creative endeavor, and i spent a good while feeling guilty for it, but it's one of the few things i'm inspired to do right now, and experience has taught me that such detours tend to be fruitful. and, upon sharing the idea with friends, i was overwhelmed by so much collective excitement that i thought it reason enough to pursue the idea.

my paintings are getting messier and are beginning to incorporate drawings. of body parts.

there're also the sugar paintings that need, i think, to make a beeline toward the abstract.

hopefully at some point these paintings (their content and visual traits) will align.

there, i hope, i'll find the (thus far wholly elusive) third painting.

in the meantime it'll just be the same fumbly, bumbly, sloppy messa frustration.

this is a commission for a lovely couple in ann arbor for whom i did another portrait a few years ago, also of their son. it's not quite done, but it's getting close. i need to have a little more cohesion between the kid and his surroundings.

they also bought this painting, to my mom's dismay (i had kind of, like, given it to her and then forgot to take it off etsy), as well as a couple of other studies.

i just started playing around with this, though it's already verging dangerously on gimmicky. something about the concentric circle-type lines.

now, it's onto a still life for david lyon. i'm thinking orange and blue. and ochre.

disregard the idiocy of this picture. i didn't know the photo was being taken

(and, sadly, this still made for the better of the two).i had to say goodbye to this piece, along with several other paintings, today. in recent weeks, i've sent work to california, australia and the gold coast (chicago). it's a bittersweet affair. paying rent with my work and making space for new work is refreshing, but i'm so used to selling work to family and friends that the finality of these sales - to strangers - is a little difficult. having this picture taken was like keeping a record (albeit a rather dazed one) that it existed.

lately, i've been playing around with incorporating drawing, painting and collage into one space, and minimally, so that the "empty" space of the canvas or drawing surface occupies the majority of the composition.
